South Sydney, Melbourne and North Queensland made the biggest gains in terms of ladder positions after the NRL’s 20th round was completed.

The Rabbitohs’ 34-18 victory in Canberra on Monday night lifted them from fourth to second place on 26 points to firm up their top four claims.

The Storm improved to sixth from eighth after beating Brisbane 30-8; they join the fifth-placed Sydney Roosters on 24 points.

And the Cowboys’ 20-12 away win against Canterbury-Bankstown enabled them to leap from 10th to seventh, leading a group of six teams on 22 points.

The round finished with seven of the eight games being won by the away teams; the only exception was Newcastle’s 16-12 victory over the Roosters.
