A valiant Vodafone Warriors side have suffered a tough 52-12 loss to the Cowboys at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night.
It was just one of those days for the Vodafone Warriors who looked good at times in attack, but just could not handle the attacking prowess of an impressive Cowboys side.
In a match which promised plenty of attacking mastery and flair, the players certainly didn’t disappoint with little master Matthew Bowen scoring in the third minute to get the game off to a brisk start. The fullback had originally kicked for Brent Tate, but when the centre batted the ball back to Bowen brilliantly, the Cowboys had opened the scoring, with Thurston also adding the easy extras.
The Cowboys were almost in again shortly after when Bowen beautifully grubbered into the in-goal for his fast moving backline. It seemed the Cowboys had scored after the ball was originally missed, however, Antonio Winterstein knocked the uncontested put-down on to miss the golden chance.
However, the Cowboys didn’t have to wait long, with Ashley Graham crossing down the right flank from a well constructed second man play. Thurston’s right to left swinging conversion then split the uprights taking the score to 12-0 after just 12 minutes.
Manu Vatuvei then looked to have hit back for the Vodafone Warriors, catching a highball near the Cowboys’ line. However, although it looked like the giant winger could score himself, he passed it inside to a lurking Matt Bowen who streaked away well inside Vodafone Warriors territory. The Cowboys then swung the ball to the left finding Antonio Winterstein who speed down the wing to score the third try of the match. Thurston missed the conversion, leaving the score at 16-0 as the point per minute scoring continued.
Ashley Graham grabbed his double shortly after to extend their lead to 22 with their attacking raids proving troublesome for the Vodafone Warriors defence. However, the Vodafone Warriors then stemmed the flow of points and hit their own attacking stride, attacking well through Konrad Hurrell and Nathan Friend before Carlos Tuimavave crossed the line to open their account. James Maloney had no problem with the conversion taking the score to 22-6 at half time.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with the Cowboys scoring in the 44th, 47th and 52nd minutes. Thurston and Michael Morgan were sensational in creating all three tries while Matt Bowen threw the final pass in the second. Thurston converted the tries to take the score to 40-6.
Aaron Payne was next to get amongst the action for the Cowboys, diving over from dummy half to score his first try of the season to increase the score to 46-6. Ashley Graham continued the try scoring bonanza with his hat-trick in the 68th minute, with Thurston topping off the effort with a wonderful sideline conversion to take the score past 50.
The Vodafone Warriors rallied late, with some nice attacking raids through Shaun Johnson. A nice backline move instigated by Feleti Mateo saw them secure a late try to Manu Vatuvei who scored his 100th NRL try to round out the high scoring match.
Best for the Cowboys were Matt Bowen, Brent Tate, Johnathan Thurston and Matt Scott, while Best for the Vodafone Warriors were Feleti Mateo, Ben Henry and Nathan Friend.
