Simon Mannering and Micheal Luck in Nelson

While their team-mates had a few days off during the club’s bye week, Vodafone Warriors captain Simon Mannering and his deputy Michael Luck were doing anything but. The two seasoned NRL campaigners headed to Mannering’s hometown Nelson where they were occupied on a Vodafone Warriors One Community visit.

Friday started with a radio interview with Kent and Radar at Classic Hits before visiting the Nelson Hospice, then a full day visiting over 1500 primary school pupils at eight local primary schools delivering the Eat Well Play Well Stay Well message and to make sure the message stuck an Eat Well Play Well Stay Well quiz was held where the children could win Vodafone Warriors One Community merchandise. The day ended with a visit to the Nelson Hospital children’s ward. Saturday found the boys with another early radio call back at Classic Hits with Muzza followed by a signing session at Nelson Bays Suzuki before the boys bought a pair of gumboots each to run a few Backyard Legend Rugby League Clinics at the Tasman Rugby League and Vodafone Warriors One Community Carnival at Tahunanui Park.

One of the features of the Carnival Day was the primary schools’ grand final between Stoke and Tahunanui Primaries with the Simon Mannering Cup at stake both teams fought exceptionally hard for the honour of being the first school on the inaugural cup and the lead see sawed many times before Tahunanui became the eventual winners. Simon and Micheal spent the day watching the games to choose player of day recipients from all 5 teams present as well as the Players of the Day from each team in the Grand Final.

The day also saw the senior grand final between the Tahunanui Tigers and the Stoke Cobras played with the Vodafone Warrior Boys running the water and messages for the two senior teams. The eventual winner was the Stoke Cobra’s.

Kidz First Childrens Hospital Visit

Jesse Royal loses an intense game of Jenga to McAllister Nathan. On Thursday the 25th of February Simon Mannering lead a group of seven players out to Kidz First Children's Hospital who are a Charity Partner of the Vodafone Warriors, the other players in attendance were Russell Packer, James Maloney, Upu Poching, Ben Matulino, Shaun Johnson and Jesse Royal.

The players hung out with kids and their families in the playroom, signing autographs and playing games such as Jenga and pool and Ben Matulino was defeated by young Te Waru Kopa in an intense game of tennis on Nintendo Wii while Mannering and Maloney went up to visit a couple of the wards.

The players and the kids all had a blast and the kids seemed to get a positive lift from spending time with some of their heroes. Kidz First Community Relations Officer Rachel Sheehan said "There seemed to be a magic feel that made this visit work, the players were great and they interacted brilliantly with our young patients and their families. A huge and special thank you to Simon Mannering and "Aussie James" for visiting our special patient in the National Burn Unit. I popped over to the unit yesterday and they mentioned the patient was still buzzing about the visit. Even though the visit may have seemed short to Simon and James, for her the visit was the special "teaspoon of medicine" that
will help her heal and assist her on her very long journey to recovery."

2010 Community Carnival

The Vodafone Warriors Community Carnival, held on Saturday the 27th of February at North Harbour Stadium was a huge success with nearly 3000 people in attendance throughout the day.
On a beautiful Auckland day, rugby league fans of all ages came out in force to experience Vodafone Warriors rugby league - Carnival style! With Auckland Rugby League setting up a number of drills and skill challenges such as the 'Passing Wall' and the 'Gauntlet', fans worked up a sweat while trying their hand at a number of drills that the Vodafone Warriors themselves do in training.

ZM provided the Ice Cream as their Mr Whippy truck pulled up much to the delight of the many children in attendance, the Lion Red Rockettes were on hand to show kids what it takes to become Rockettes of the future and fans lined up in force to get autographs and have their photos taken with Vodafone Warriors' stars Steve Price, James Gavet and Ian Henderson.

All in all it was a great day of rugby league as many of the fans made the short walk into the main stadium to watch the Vodafone Warriors and Junior Warriors play in their final trial matches before they embark on tough seasons in the NRL and Toyota Cup respectively.
