League in Libraries

The Vodafone Warriors, in association with proud club sponsor Konica Minolta are delighted to be running the 3rd annual Vodafone Warriors ‘League in Libraries’ programme, previously known as the Vodafone Warriors Rugby League Reads Programme. The programme continues to go from strength to strength thanks to excellent engagement from all those involved.

Eight classes from the Auckland region have been selected to participate in this important community initiative aimed at improving the literacy levels of school children aged 7-9 years.

This years winning schools were:

- Oranga School
- Sunnyhills Primary School
- Pomaria Primary School
- West Harbour School
- Harrisville School
- Pukekohe East Primary School
- Stanmore Bay Primary School
- Northcote Primary School (Overall winning school)

To be considered for the programme, Year 4 and 5 classes are invited to enter a writing competition. Students are asked to submit an illustrated short story or poem incorporating their favourite Vodafone Warriors player. Your entries will be judged against other classes from throughout Auckland. The eight winning classes will be invited to join Vodafone Warriors players and attend the League in Libraries day to be held at one of four Auckland libraries.

The eight selected schools will also each receive 2 x Canterbury Rugby League Balls and the Top Student story will win a signed 2010 Vodafone Warriors Rugby League Jersey.

The League in Libraries programme provides a fantastic opportunity for kiwi children to learn the valuable life skills of reading and writing with their favourite Vodafone Warriors heroes.

Eat Well, PlayWell, Stay Well

The Eat Well, Play Well, Stay Well” programme uses the game of Rugby League to encourage students to consider their own behaviours and attitudes towards leading a healthy, balanced life.

The programme has been developed for use in all levels of primary schools and will provide lessons that can be delivered to children aged 5 – 12 years over a 5 week programme. The lessons look to achieve personal development, health and physical activity outcomes. All of the interaction will aim to provide outcome-based learning strategies.

All activities will allow students to be able to demonstrate an achievement of knowledge, skills and value outcomes, which they can then translate into real life situations.

By examining their own life experiences and learning through Rugby League, students can be empowered to make healthy lifestyle decisions now and in the future.
